What is Lab IT?

Lab IT is a service for machines and devices which, for various reasons, require protection and special adaptation, and therefore cannot be connected to the regular network.

Illustration that shows how Lab IT is set up. The lab machine/device itself is in a restricted network, and can be accessed from the outside through the lab-portal. Files and data are stored on dedicated UiO storage locations.

Working on a machine or device set up with Lab IT

The researchers begin their work directly on the machine in the lab where it is set up. The lab equipment can be used to collect and generate data, for example through scanning or taking measurements.

The researchers can store the data securely in UiO’s storage services. Further analysis of the data can be carried out from an office computer.

If needed, you can log in to the machine remotely. For example, a researcher who needs to control a job running on the machine, or a vendor who needs access to update machine software.

Data storage

The data collected from the lab machine should be stored in one of the recommended UiO storage services:

  • UiO’s object storage (S3)
  • UiO’s storage hotel
  • Educloud (coming soon!)
  • TSD (coming soon!)

Which storage solution is most suitable is decided in collaboration with local IT support and in accordance with UiO’s data storage guide.

Remote access

All devices set up with Lab IT are protected, and can only be accessed from outside in two ways:

  • The lab-portal: To access the machine through a Remote Desktop
  • SSH with lab-login: To reach the lab device through SSH?
