SNE4130 – Historical and Sociocultural Perspectives on Learning and Development
Course description
Course content
This course is compulsory for students registered on the Special Needs Education Programme.
The course runs together with SNE3130 – Historical and Sociocultural Perspectives on Learning and Development (discontinued)
Areas of study include:
Introduction to historical and sociocultural theory of communication, learning and Development.
Socio-cultural/ cultural-historic theory related to international principles about education for all, special needs education and development towards educational inclusion.
Practical examples of communication and mediation.

- Knowledge and understanding of learning and development in historical and socio-cultural / cultural-historic perspectives
- Special focus on learning and development related to disabilities and other kinds of vulnerability.
Skills:
- Skills in focusing on the individual learner in her/his context.
- Skills in taking into account the diversity of individual learners in group-, class- and local context.
- Skills in cross-disciplinary and inter-sectoral cooperation.
Competence:
- Competence related to discover each individual child/pupil/citizen as an active learner.
- Competence in discovering key actors for care, communication and mediation of individual learning processes related to group settings (caregivers, teachers, special needs educators, etc).
Admission to the course
Students who are admitted to study programmes at UiO must each semester register which courses and exams they wish to sign up for in Studentweb.

This course is also open for international exchange students at Master`s level with a relevant Bachelor`s degree or equivalent.

All teaching in special needs education are covered by the Norwegian regulations?relating to?suitability assessment in higher education.

Examination
The final exam will consist of a written individual essay (7 days home assignment ). The examination will count as the entire portion of the course grade.
Language of examination
The examination text is given in English, and you submit your response in English.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
Resit an examination
Students who do not pass an exam may have a second attempt as soon as it is possible to arrange. This is called a re-sit examination. The re-sit examination is held within 3 months of the original examination.
Students who have passed their exam, but who wish to improve their grade may not participate in a re-sit examination. You may take an exam to improve your grades at the next time the course has an ordinary exam, as long as you have not already used all three attempts. The Department will provide information and guidelines about the re-sit examination.
