PSY4400 – Professional Knowledge Work in Industrial- and Organizational Psychology
Course content
For the class of 2007, the course will contain two interrelated topics within IO psychology.
The first topic is group dynamics and group effectiveness. Lectures on the topic will be given at the start of the semester. These lectures will refer to the Forsyth book and a compendium of articles, which is the curriculum for this part of the course.
The group dynamics part of the course also has a practical component. This involves preparing the groups for the second part of the course, as well as a following-up of the group processes during the second part. The end-result of the second part of the course is an individual portfolio describing the relation between the curriculum/lectures on the one hand, and the actual group dynamics of the seminar group on the other.
A separate course in SPGR (a particular methodology for assessing group dynamics and performance), will be held during the course.
The second topic of the course is a practical group assignment, where the aim is to give the students an appreciation for the skills involved in practical research and consulting within IO. The topic of the assignments will be from industrial psychology, and involve external partners. The end-result of the second part of the course is a scientific assignment report. Curriculum on the second part of the course depends on the individual group assignment, and will be handed out/discussed during the seminars.
Learning outcome
The learning outcome of this course is:
- An understanding of small group dynamics and effectiveness
- Practical tools for assessing and guiding teams
- A reflective attitude towards group work (project based work)
- Conducting an external assignment for a contractor (external partner)
- Learning the theory and methods related to the particular topic within industrial psychology (topic given during the semester)

Prerequisites
Formal prerequisite knowledge
This course is only offered to students on the master's degree programme in psychology.
Teaching
The teaching will be a mix of seminars and lectures.
Examination
Portfolio.
The students are required to hand in a set of activities (learning portfolio).The learning portfolio consists of project assignments, group assignments and seminar presentations, and other material that compose the portfolio.

Resit an examination
You may apply to take a new exam if you fail this course. With revisions, you are allowed to hand in the same portfolio as the one originally handed in. The exam will be considered as a second attempt. The deadline for an application will be posted on the message board each spring semester.
