PSY4304 – Current issues in Cognitive Neuroscience
Course content
The course will focus on current themes in cognitive neuroscience, which include a considerably wide spectrum of issues and domains (ranging from memory, attention, perception, and emotions).
The choice of topics and issues will be based on what are the most current lines of research conducted at the Center for the Study of Human Cognition (CSHC) at the University of Oslo but also on what are the debates at the forefront of the international scientific community.
Issues will be presented individually by invited researchers at the CSHC as well as by the students themselves.
Each student will present a research article published in high-impact journals within the field and (together with the seminar instructors) will lead group discussions taking their reading and presentation of the research as the starting point.
Learning outcome
The goal of the course is to give to students the opportunity to evaluate and publicly discuss current international research that is at the cutting-edge of the field of cognitive neuroscience.
The ultimate goal will be to acquire knowledge about the functioning of our brain and its understanding of the world.
Admission
This course is only offered to students who have been admitted to the Master's programme as a whole (2 years). ERASMUS students from our exchange partners in Thübingen and Maastricht may apply to enrol in the course.

Only students admitted to the course may take part in instruction and tuition and sit for the examination. The examiation in this course is not available for external candidates.
Teaching
Obligatory activity is an oral presentation during seminars. Attendance at lectures and seminars is compulsory (80 %).
Compulsory tuition activities are valid for the 2 next semesters after approval date.
Absence from compulsory tuition activities
If you are ill or have another valid reason for being absent from compulsory tuition activities, your absence may be approved or the compulsory activity may be postponed.
Access to teaching
A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and has had these approved, is not entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework. A student who has been admitted to a course, but who has not completed compulsory instruction and coursework or had these approved, is entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework, depending on available capacity.
Examination
Term paper (written paper).
Obligatory activity is an oral presentation in addition to attendance. This needs to be passed in order to be able to submit the term paper.

Use of sources and citation
You should familiarize yourself with the rules that apply to the use of sources and citations. If you violate the rules, you may be suspected of cheating/attempted cheating.

No examination support material is allowed.
Language of examination
The examination text is given in English, and you submit your response in English.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a pass/fail scale. Read more about the grading system.
If you are an exchange student, please note that you will receive a pass or fail for this course and this cannot be converted into an A-F grading scale.

Resit an examination
There is no make up exam for this course. Students who have been sick on the exam must register for the exam next time the course is scheduled.
If one doesn't sit for the exam one must submit proof of legitimate absence (illness, etc.), see § 5.5 in Regulations for studies and examinations at the University.
Students who have special conditions - for example, that one is chronically ill, prevented from further progression or lose the right to study at the university, may apply to have a postponed exam the same term. It is not automatically granted.
