PSY4204 – Hands-on training in emotional and cognitive development
Course description
Course content
This course seeks to transmit in-depth knowledge about the development of a wide range of cognitive and emotional phenomena: Language, executive functions, gender differences, emotion regulation, emotion understanding, emotional competence, and attachment. These phenomena will be looked at from mainly a psychological perspective but also from a neuropsychological perspective.
The course also seeks to transmit skills about various methods to research and how to assess cognitive and emotional development. At the end of the course, students will have constituted a portfolio of methods to assess the development of various cognitive and emotional phenomena that they might use in the future as researcher or practitioner.

Knowledge:
Upon completing the course, you should have:
- In-depth knowledge about the development of a selection of cognitive and emotional phenomena from a developmental, psychological and neuropsychological perspective (e.g. language, executive functions, gender differences, emotion regulation, emotion understanding, emotional competence, and attachment).
Skills:
Upon completing the course, you should be able:
- To assess the development of a wide range of cognitive and emotional phenomena by the mean of tests, questionnaires, interviews, as well as Eye-tracking.
- To conduct a basic and applied research (planning, execution, reporting).
General competences:
Upon completing the course, you should be able:
- To analyse knowledge and scientific methods
- To communicate scientific knowledge to researchers and non-researchers
- To use scientific knowledge and methods outside the world of research
- To collaborate with researchers and practitioners

Admission to the course
This course is mandatory for students from the study option Helse, utvikling og samfunn who choose the developmental psychology option (fordypning).The course is an elective for students who will choose one of the other three options in the HUS-master.
ERASMUS students can apply for the course.
Formal prerequisite knowledge
The course requires that you have studied PSY1200 – Introduction to developmental psychology or the equivalent.
Overlapping courses
- 10 credits overlap with PSY4202 – Nevrokognitiv utvikling (discontinued).
- 5 credits overlap with PSY4203 – Emotional Development (discontinued).
Teaching
Teaching is given through lectures and seminars.
Students are expected to be active in both (e.g. group presentations, self-assessments & assessments of fellow students).
80% attendance to all sessions (lectures and seminars) is compulsory.
Compulsory tuition activities are valid for the 2 next semesters after approval date.
Students will be dived into smaller working groups for the seminar assignments.
Examination
Two written group assignments and one oral group presentation:
- Emotion: Group presentation
- Cognition: Group assignment
- Cognition and emotion: Group assignment
All three modules and exam components must be passed during the same semester in order to pass the course.
Examination support material
Generating all or part of the exam answer using AI tools such as Chat GPT or similar is not allowed.
Language of examination
The examination text is given in English.You may submit your response in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.
Written exams can be written in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.
Oral exams must be presented in English
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a pass/fail scale. Read more about the grading system.
Resit an examination
If you are sick or have another valid reason for not attending the regular exam, we offer a postponed exam later in the same semester.
