In this course, you will get in-depth training in how to use conversations and human interaction as research data. Different interview forms and ethnographic traditions will be presented, and you will learn how to justify your data collection strategies methodologically, whether you are interviewing elite individuals in your own city or going on fieldwork in a different cultural setting. The course focuses on techniques for generating rich data sets and maintaining a critically reflexive approach to your own role as an interactive researcher.

Knowledge objectives

Throughout this course, you will acquire in-depth knowledge about

• • conversations and interactions between people as data sources in qualitative research

  • different qualitative research formats, including interviews, focus groups, observation and fieldwork

  • the methodological underpinnings of conversational and observational data

Skill objectives

Throughout this course, you will learn how to

• • practically conduct interviews, focus groups, and participant observation

  • develop interview guides using different question types and probing strategies

  • moderate focus groups and employ suitable elicitation techniques

  • develop combinations of interactive methods and experiment with established forms, such as participatory mapping and walkalongs

  • carry out data collection in a cross-cultural context

  • produce field notes and how to use them in research

  • generate and use transcriptions of qualitative data, with and without digital software and artificial intelligence

• report conversational and observational data in credible ways in research publications and in oral presentations

Throughout this course you will

• • develop an experience-based and methodologically qualified understanding of how to study conversations and human interaction

  • develop an awareness of your own role as an interviewer, moderator or observer

  • become able to collaborate in cross-cultural research environments and projects
