SGO2200 – Economic geography: Globalisation and regional development
Course description
Course content
This course provides students with an introduction to economic geography, with particular emphasis on the two main research areas that are i) economic globalisation and ii) regional development. The overall theme of the course is: What are the main processes at play in the economy that condition the location and distribution of economic activity, and how are different places, and people, affected? The first part of the course (‘Foundations’) gives an overview of the discipline, and major trends in the world economy. The second part (‘Perspectives’) presents key concepts and theories that in the third part (‘Dynamics and Outcomes’) are applied to disentangle the geographies of production and the restructuring of work and employment, the impact of multinational corporations, and the role of states. Particular attention is here paid to the causes and consequences of uneven development at different spatial scales. The fourth part (‘Prospects’) reflects on the future of economic globalization from the perspective of democratic support at the national level and evolving geopolitical circumstances.??

Teaching
The teaching is organized as lectures and seminars. The course is part of the regular course provision at The Faculty of Social Science.
Teaching will be held in English. All readings and seminar instructions are?in English.
Application for change of seminar group
Teaching is mainly held during daytime. Teaching is organised as a combination of lectures and seminars throughout the semester. On the semester page you can find information about time and place of the current semesters lectures and seminars.
Examination
A 4-hour written school exam.
Withdrawal from an examination and attempts
It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you?withdraw from the exam?after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.
Examination support material
Students may use dictionaries at this exam. Dictionaries must be handed in before the examination. Please read regulations for dictionaries permitted at the examination.
Language of examination
The examination text is given in English.You may submit your response in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.
Grading scale
