HMM4100 – Introduction to statistics
Course content
The course covers elemetary statistical topics. The main topics are descriptive statistics, probability theory, estimation, and hypothesis testing. It will be given examples of statistical applications from other topics relevant to health management and health econmics.
Learning outcome
The course shall give the students a basic understanding of the main topics mentioned above. Among other things, the course shall enable the students to
? Recognize and apply some common probability distributions, and assess if underlying assumptions for the distribution seem reasonable.
? Be able to perform basic statistical calculations and graphical analyses.
? Analyze research questions based on statistical data, draw relevant conclusions, and be familiar with the limitations of particular statistical methods.
? Be able to discuss and reflect upon etichal topics relevant to statistical methods.
Admission
This course is reserved for programme students at the master programme in Health Economics, Policy and Management.

Recommended previous knowledge
Statistics is a topic within applied mathematics. Students are incouraged to refresh their basic mathematical skills prior to the course, or alternatively, to be prepared to spend some extra effort on mathematics during the course.
Teaching
The teaching in this course is organised jointly with HSTAT1101
Lectures and seminars. Compulsory coursework comprising a qualification test and a group presentation.
This course will also be taught for the bachelor students in Health Management and Health Economics. You will find the detailed teaching plan and the time of the exam on the bachelor course code.
Access to teaching
A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and has had these approved, is not entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework. A student who has been admitted to a course, but who has not completed compulsory instruction and coursework or had these approved, is entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework, depending on available capacity.
Examination
Written exam.
The compulsory coursework has to be passed before the exam. The qualification test is a multiple choice test which is conducted on Fronter. It will be possible to make several attempts over a limited time period. The group presentation consists of a written and an oral part. If the presentation is not approved it will be given one extra attempt. Students who previously have had their compulsory coursework approved do not need to perform the coursework again.

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
Explanations and appeals
Resit an examination
In this course the exam is regularly scheduled each semester. It is not arranged make-up exam in this course, cf. § 5.5 i Forskrift om studier og eksamener ved Universitetet i Oslo.
Withdrawal from an examination
It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.
