GEO4230 – Basin formation and sequence stratigraphy
Course description
Course content
The course deals with mechanisms of basin formation, including physical properties of lithosphere and effects of mantle dynamics, types of basins, controlling factors for accommodation space for sediments, sediment input, deposition and preservation. Sequence formation, depositional architecture, behavior of sedimentary successions during subsidence, and also tectonic processes and structures in different tectonic regimes relevant to petroleum exploration and production are discussed. Different types of basins are exemplified from various petroleum provinces of the World. Seismic stratigraphy and well log interpretation will be examined within a sequence stratigraphic framework in relation to basin dynamics, sedimentary processes and depositional environment.
Learning outcome
To give the students modern and up-dated knowledge and insight in basin formation,sequence stratigraphy and structural geology with relevance to petroleum exploration and production.

Prerequisites
Formal prerequisite knowledge
General competency for studying petroleum geology and geophysics at the master level.
Recommended previous knowledge
Knowledge in structural geology, seismic and sedimentology should have been obtained on general bachelor level. It is recommended to follow the course GEO4220 – Depositional environments and biostratigraphy (discontinued) in the same semester.

Teaching
Lectures and seminars (2x4 hours per week), exercises up to 6 hours a week, one week field course and potentially short excursions, mandatory reports on selected exercises, and seminar presentations.
Attendance at the first lecture is compulsory. Students who fail to meet, are considered to have withdrawn from the course unless they have previously given notice to the Studies administration, email address: studieinfo@geo.uio.no

Examination
Evaluation of 1-2 written reports/field note books (counts 30% in final grade together) and written final written exam (3 hours) (counts 70%). Each part exam must be passed individually.
Language of examination
In this course any written exam questions or assignment questions may be available in English only.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
Explanations and appeals
Resit an examination
Students who can document a valid reason for absence from the regular examination are offered a postponed examination at the beginning of the next semester.
Re-scheduled examinations are not offered to students who withdraw during, or did not pass the original examination.
Withdrawal from an examination
It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.

Evaluation
The course is subject to continuous evaluation. At regular intervals we also ask students to participate in a more comprehensive evaluation.
