Course content
Students work primarily with non-fiction texts and exercises with themes from Norwegian daily life and society. Important and basic points of grammar are examined, and attention is given to variations in the Norwegian language. Students expand their vocabulary and learn idioms and varied ways of expressing themselves in different contexts.
Learning outcome
Students will learn: to understand oral presentations on everyday life and current issues; to including the ability to understand the main ideas of radio and television programs; to read textbooks and simple authentic texts and newspaper articles; and to have sufficient command of both oral and written Norwegian so that errors do not interfere with communication.
This course is equivalent to the courses listed below, under "Overlapping courses". The course is also equivalent to B1 level on the CEFR scale, but it does not automatically qualify you for a residence permit.
Admission to the course
The course fee is NOK 16 700. Prices are subject to change on a year-to-year basis. You must also pay the semester fee to complete your registration at UiO. UiO employees and PhD students are NOT exempt from the course fee or the semester fee.
Residence permits/visas are not granted for Norwegian language courses. You cannot apply to the course if you do not have a valid visa/residence permit.
NORA0110 does not qualify for financial support from L?nekassen.
The application period for the Autumn semester is from May 2 to June 1. The application period for the Spring semester is from October 10 to November 20. Precise dates may be subject to change.?See application instructions for NORA courses.
Formal prerequisite knowledge
Applicants must meet the general admission requirements to university studies in Norway. To be admitted you must submit required supporting documents.
It is presumed that the applicant has either passed NORA Level I, Norskpr?ven with an A2 level on all four parts, or a course equivalent to NORA0110 at UiO or another accredited university. Students who have taken a course equivalent to NORA0110 that give letter grades at another institute or faculty at UiO must have at least a D on all parts of the exam(s) in order to enroll in NORA0120. Students who fail to document their A2 level will be demoted to level I.

Teaching
Classroom sessions include instruction and group work for a total of 84 classroom hours. One classroom hour lasts for 45 minutes. Regular attendance is expected of all participants, but mandatory attendance is not required.
Spring courses run from week 4 to week 17/18 (subject to change). The schedule for the spring semester will be published in late autumn, and group choice will open in early January on Studentweb. Autumn courses run from week 35 to 48/49 (subject to change). The schedule for the autumn semester will be published in late spring, and group choice will open in early August on Studentweb.
Examination
The final exam consists of an oral and a written examination. The oral exam counts for 50% of the total grade and includes two parts: listening comprehension and spoken production. The oral exam lasts for 30 minutes. The written exam counts for 50% of the total grade and includes two parts: written production and reading comprehension. The written exam lasts for 2.5 hours. Your teacher will inform you when your oral exam will take place. There will also be information about the time and place of the written exam in Studentweb.

Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a pass/fail scale. Read more about the grading system.
Examination results are available three weeks after the exam at the latest. Grades and transcripts will be available via StudentWeb.
Resit an examination
Candidates may re-sit an exam free of charge if they: a) have a valid absence (doctor’s note), or b) failed the examination. A valid doctor's note must be given to the ISS office 3 days after the exam at the latest.
Candidates who did not show up for the scheduled exam must pay a fee of NOK 2 500 to re-sit the exam.
You can take the exam up to three times. You cannot re-sit an examination if you have used the maximum number of examination attempts. Candidates who re-sit the exam must take all parts of the exam again (both written and oral exams).
Candidates who re-sit the exam may take the exam in April/May, July/August and November/December when regular exams are arranged. Candidates who are re-sitting NORA exams can also re-sit the exam in the summer semester.

To re-sit in the spring semester: Contact us between January 1st - January 31st
To re-sit in the summer semester: Contact us between June 1st - June 30th
To re-sit in the autumn semester: Contact us between August 1st - August 31st
Please note that there are limited number of seats for the re-sit exams. You are therefore not guaranteed a seat if you register for a re-sit exam; registrations are treated on a first-come, first-serve basis. We therefore encourage you to sign up for a re-sit exam early in the registration period.
