MEVIT4130 – Mediatized stories: Self-representations in digital storytelling
Course content
There is an explosion of digital means by which 'ordinary people' can shape and share stories about themselves, on the Internet as well as offline. This course studies Digital Storytelling as self-representational uses of the new means to tell 'my' or 'our' story.
The course relates to the international research project based at the University of Oslo, Mediated stories. Mediation perspectives on digital storytelling among youth
The course focuses on media use among young people and discusses various forms of self-representational digital storytelling, as well as conditions and risks related to self-narratives on the internet or in digital media. This will take place on the backdrop of updated surveys on digital media use among children and youth.
Digital storytelling will be discussed in terms of its societal meaning and in relation to various conceptualizations of ‘mediation’ and ‘mediatization’.
Learning outcome
- The student will have developed knowledge and understanding of the processes and actors involved in digital storytelling.
- The student will have knowledge and understanding of the main academic approaches to mediatization theories.
- The student will have developed knowledge and understanding about mediatization of digital storytelling.
- The student will have developed a critical attitude towards self-representation in new forms of social networking on the Internet.
- The student will get training in academic writing related to the term paper.
- The student will acquire insights into concrete research design and research processes as the course is linked with an international research project.
Admission

Admission as master student, with a Bachelor?s Degree in Media Studies or equivalent.
Examination
Obligatory qualifying assignment
Compulsory outline of term paper on power point. More information about deadlines and presentation will be given in the seminars.
Exam
Term paper up to 10 pages, where each page is calculated to approximately 2 300 characters without spaces.
Use of sources and citation
You should familiarize yourself with the rules that apply to the use of sources and citations. If you violate the rules, you may be suspected of cheating/attempted cheating.
Language of examination
The examination text is given in English.You may submit your response in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.

Withdrawal from an examination
It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.

The course is subject to continuous evaluation. At regular intervals we also ask students to participate in a more comprehensive evaluation.
