MEVIT4100 – Nordic Media in an International Perspective
Course content
This course gives an introduction to the historical, political and structural characteristics of the media in the Nordic region.
The course emphasizes theories on the Welfare State and looks at comparative studies of different media systems, and in relation to these ideas discusses to what degree the media in the Nordic countries have specific and distinctive characteristics.
The course also looks at what characterizes the strategies and means of the media sector in relation to the digitalization processes of our time.
Learning outcome
The students will:
- develop an understanding of the key characteristics of Nordic Media, and how the region relates to the international media landscape in terms of media history, media policy and media industry.
- learn analyze and critically examine the idea of a Nordic Media Model that stands out in relation to international overarching trends.
- be able to discuss and analyze Nordic media in an international context with comparative perspectives.
Admission
Admission to Nordic Media (programme option) (being phased out) is required.
Teaching
Teaching is conducted in group sessions. Some will be dedicated to a mix of lectures and seminars, while others will be dedicated to group work.
The students will be given a qualification assignment, rated approved/not approved. Qualification assignments must be approved in order to take the exam.
Access to teaching
A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and has had these approved, is not entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework. A student who has been admitted to a course, but who has not completed compulsory instruction and coursework or had these approved, is entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework, depending on available capacity.

Language of examination
The examination text is given in English, and you submit your response in English.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.

Withdrawal from an examination
It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.
