ENG4106 – Contrastive analysis: Syntax, lexis, discourse
Course content
The course gives in-depth knowledge about contrastive analysis and assesses its role in theoretical and applied linguistics. It gives insight into how linguistic features behave cross-linguistically, with an emphasis on the language pair Norwegian and English (but also in relation to other languages).
Learning outcome
After completing this course you will have:
- acquired advanced knowledge and insight into contrastive analysis on various levels.
- acquired an ability to analyse and systematize large amounts of cross-linguistic data.
- learned different approaches to contrastive analysis, especially corpus-based research.

This course is for students admitted to the master programmes?European Languages (master's two years),?Lektorprogrammet (master - 5 ?r), masterspesialisering i engelsk?and?Profesjonsrettet master med integrert praktisk-pedagogisk utdanning (masterspesialisering i engelsk).
Students enrolled in other master`s degree programmes can, on application, be admitted to the course if this is cleared by their own study programme.
Recommended previous knowledge
Students should preferably have taken at least 30 ECTS in language topics at the BA level (in English and possibly other languages).
(Basic) knowledge of Norwegian is recommended.
Teaching
The course is taught as a seminar, meeting two hours per week for 10 weeks, totaling 20 hours.
Students will have to bring their own laptops to the seminars.
Obligatory activities:
Each student must present a linguistic paper (on or related to the required reading, which will be the basis for evaluation). It is obligatory to show up for a minimum of 60% of the teaching. In this course you must attend a minimum of 6 out of 10 seminars. The requirement is absolute. Attendance at 10 out of 10 seminars is strongly encouraged. If you miss a class it is your responsibility to catch up the work you have missed.?
The allowed absence limit will cover all absences, including illness. You will not be granted valid absences with documentation, even when the absence is due to something beyond your control.
In certain circumstances, i.e. serious or chronic illness, you could apply for special needs accomodations.
Fulfilled course requirements are only valid the semester you attend the course.
Examination
The assessment of the course is based on a term paper of approximately ten standard pages (a standard page consists of 2,300 characters). This does not include references and bibliography. In the evaluation, both content and language are taken into account.
The topic for the term paper will be determined by the teacher and student together. Students will be given an opportunity to submit a draft of the term paper and receive individual feedback on both the form and content of the draft.
Language of examination
The examination text is given in English, and you submit your response in English.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
Resit an examination
A term paper or equivalent that is passed may not be resubmitted in revised form.
