ENG2162 ¨C Contrastive and Learner Language Analysis

Course content

The course gives an introduction to contrastive analysis and learner language analysis focusing on a comparison of English and Norwegian and on the analysis of English as produced by Norwegians. The teaching draws on the following text corpora:

• the English-Norwegian Parallel Corpus
• the Oslo Multilingual Corpus
• the Norwegian component of the International Corpus of Learner English

Learning outcome

After completing this course you will be able to:

• discuss some of the problems faced by Norwegians learning English
• describe similarities and differences between English and Norwegian
• use electronic text corpora in contrastive and learner language analysis

Formal prerequisite knowledge

The course requires?ENG1100 - English Grammar or similar knowledge.

The course assumes a good command of both English and Norwegian

Overlapping courses

• 10 credits overlap with ENG2162 ¨C Contrastive and Learner Language Analysis (discontinued).

Teaching

Seminar, two hours per week for 14 weeks, 28 hours in all.?Students will have to bring their own laptops to the seminars.

Obligatory activities:

• It is obligatory to show up for a minimum of 60% of the teaching. In this course you must attend a minimum of 8 out of 14 seminars. The requirement is absolute. Attendance at 14 out of 14 seminars is strongly encouraged. If you miss a class it is your responsibility to catch up the work you have missed.?

The allowed absence limit will cover all absences, including illness. You will not be granted valid absences with documentation, even when the absence is due to something beyond your control.

In certain circumstances, i.e. serious or chronic illness, you could apply for special needs accomodations.

Fulfilled course requirements are only valid the semester you attend the course.

Examination

The obligatory requirements must be fulfilled in order to qualify for the exam.

The evaluation will be based on a take home exam spanning over 3 days. The paper must be approximately ten standard pages (a standard page consists of 2,300 characters). This does not include references and bibliography. In the evaluation, both content and language are taken into account.

Language of examination

The examination text is given in English, and you submit your response in English.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
