KUN4014 – Introduction to Methods and Project Development in Curating and Heritage of Modernism

Course content

The course introduces theories and methods directly related to the planning of KUN4900 – Masterprosjekt i kuratering, kritikk og modernismens kulturarv and KUN4190 – Mastergradsessay i kuratering / modernismens kulturarv.?

Guidance is also provided in drafting project descriptions.

The course is divided into two phases. In phase I, students receive an introduction to the use of library resources and relevant special archives, as well as the opportunity to visit institutions with central collections. You read the common syllabus for writing a master's thesis (approximately 250 pages).

In phase II, students choose which direction of practice they want to go: either curating art exhibitions or preserving the cultural heritage of modernism. In the teaching, you will be introduced to theories related to curatorial practice as well as preserving the cultural heritage of modernism. You read a common introductory syllabus (approx. 300 pages) plus a self-selected syllabus (300-400 pages) that provides an in-depth study of a topic that could also be a possible topic for the master's degree essay.

Learning outcome

After completing this course:

  • you can plan your master's project
  • you can choose and define a topic for your project and the master's essay
  • you have acquired insight into the topic you plan to work on in the project and the master's essay through an initial reading of essential literature.you have gained a brief introductory understanding of curating art exhibitions and the thinking surrounding the preservation of modernism
  • you have become familiar with central collections and archives in Oslo which house resources for doing research within art history
  • you have received training in verbalizing and communicating your plans for the project.

Admission to the course

Registered students must apply each semester in order to be admitted and register for the exam in Studentweb.?To be admitted to this course, you must be a student in Curating, Criticism and the Heritage of Modernism (field of study) or Art History and Visual Studies (field of study).

Teaching

Up to 34 hours of teaching are provided, divided into lectures, seminars and group work. In addition, there is individual supervision.

Phase I of the course contains joint lectures, visits to institutions and possibly exhibitions.

Phase II contains 2-3 joint meetings/seminars where students present their drafts of their project descriptions.

To be able to take the exam, you must have completed and received approval for the following mandatory teaching activities:

  • Attendance for at least 75% of the teaching
  • Submission of a preliminary project description with a bibliography
  • Participation in individual supervision
  • Oral presentation of a preliminary project description
  • Opponent's comment on a fellow student's project description.

All mandatory written assignments must be submitted in Canvas. You must familiarize yourself with the login and submission method well in advance of the submission deadline.

If you are absent from teaching for more than the permitted limit, or are ill when you are supposed to submit a mandatory activity, you must apply for a valid absence / postponed submission deadline.

Approved mandatory activities are only valid for the semester in which they are approved.

Examination

The exam consists of a 6-8 page project description, including a bibliography. The project description must include a plan for both the project and the master's degree essay.

All mandatory teaching activities must be approved before you will be allowed to take part in the exam.

The opportunity is given to submit the project description at the beginning of the spring semester under certain conditions. These conditions are:

Approved completion of all mandatory activities from the fall semester, but failed submitted project outline (exam).Approved project outline completed in the same semester as the exam (i.e., spring).There will be no teaching in the spring semester, but students will receive one to two individual tutoring sessions, depending on the changes made in the assignment topic.

Language of examination

You can answer the exam in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English. You send an application for an English assignment text to the contact point for the subject.
