Obligatory attendance
-
There is obligatory attendance in four of the six first seminars. Valid absence is not permitted under any circumstances.
-
The absence limit is intended to cover normal absences due to illness and the like. You will therefore not be granted valid absence from the seminars based on medical certificate, even if the absence is due to obstacles that are not your fault.
- You can check that your attendance is registered in Studentweb or by asking to check your teacher's attendance list.
Obligatory assignments
The two assignments have to be submitted in Canvas within set deadlines. You will find the assignment deadlines here. The seminar teacher will assess your assignment to approved / not approved. and have to be approved by your seminar teacher.
Obligatory assignment 1
- analytic essay
- between 400 and 600 words
- your teacher will not give individual feedback
Obligatory assignment 2
- argumentative essay
- between 800 and 1000 words
- your teacher will give individual feedback
- this submission will be the basis of the term paper you will upload as a part of the final exam
Formal requirements
Both obligatory assignments must meet the following formal requirements. If your assignments do not meet these formal requirements, you will not be given the opportunity to submit again.
Length and font
- Word count: 400 to 600 words for obligatory assignment 1, and 800 to 1000 words for obligatory assignment 2.
- Use a clear and legible font. We recommend using Times New Roman, 12 point with 1 ? line spacing.
- Write your name, assignment number and assignment description, and the word count at the top of your assignment. The word count includes references in brackets and footnotes, but not the literature list, and not the description of the assignment which appears at the top of your answer. The file name should include your name.
Independence and relevance
- The text you submit must be your own work.
- The text must be work that you have undertaken in fulfilment of the assignment you were given in your seminar group.
Academic integrity: references and literature list
- When you cite or quote from external sources (facts, arguments, claims), you must provide appropriate references (citations) to these sources.
- References can be included in brackets, or as footnotes/endnotes. This applies both to when you quote directly from other sources, and when you describe arguments from other sources in your own words.
- The requirement for appropriate references applies to all sources that you use: original texts from the syllabus, commentaries from the syllabus, textbooks, study guides, websites, lecture notes, etc.
- Your essays should include a literature list with all sources used.
- It is important that you familiarize yourself with the rules of sources and references. Missing references may lead to suspicion of plagiarism. Please use UiO's "Use of sources and citations" and The Faculty of Humanities' "Sources and referencing".
What characterizes a good assignment?
The following characteristics are not formal requirements, but rather qualities you should strive for in your writing process.
Knowledge
The assignments should show knowledge about the original texts.
Structure
In obligatory assignment 1, you should analyze and discuss and argument or standpoint. You should begin with a short introduction that gives an overview of the argument or standpoint. The main body of the essay should be systematic and be connected to the individual paragraphs.
In obligatory assignment 2, you should discuss, that is, argue for or against an argument or standpoint. You should begin with a short introduction that gives an overview of the argument or standpoint. The introduction in the argumentative essay should also include a short explanation on why this is philosophically interesting. The main body of the essay should be systematic and be connected to the individual paragraphs. You should discuss an argument or standpoint from the syllabus. You are not only supposed to present an author's argument, but also critically assess its validity. It is sufficient to show your ability to critically assess a given statement or thesis. There is no requirement to end an argumentative essay with a clear-cut conclusion.
Independence
Independence is demonstrated by your ability to critically problematize and discuss standpoints. This can include questioning the text, suggesting different interpretations, or pointing out various answers to the research question. Independence is also demonstrated by explaining all of your points with your own words. Citations can be used to illustrate a point, but not as a replacement of your own explanation. It should be clear to the reader that all parts of the essay are relevant to the assignment task. Pure, unfocused summaries do not demonstrate independence.
Extended deadline
If needed, you may apply for an extension of the deadline by filling out an electronic form. You must give notice before the deadline of the assignment to henvendelser@ifikk.uio.no by the time the original deadline expires.
If you do not get the compulsory activities approved
If you don't get one obligatory activity approved, you will be transferred to the self-study variant of EXPHIL03.
This means that you will lose your place in the seminar group and the right to take the exam in the seminar variant if you:
- don't submit or don't get approved obligatory assignment 1
- don't submit or don't get approved obligatory assignment 2
- don't meet the attendance requirement for the seminars
You will be notified on your student e-mail address before you are transferred to the self study variant.
If you wish to withdraw from the exam, you can do this yourself in Studentweb by the withdrawal deadline. If you wish to switch to the self-study variant you must give notice at least 3 weeks before the exam to henvendelser@ifikk.uio.no. Include your name and student number in the e-mail.
Resetting an examination
All the compulsory activities in the seminar variant must be completed and approved in the same semester as you take the exam.
If you complete and get approved activities, but no not pass the exam, the activities must be done again in order to take the exam in a later semester.
If you have passed the exam, but still want to take the exam again in a later semester, you must complete and get approved the obligatory activities again.
