MITRA4000 – Key Issues in Modern International and Transnational History
Course content
The course gives a broad introduction to major issues in international and transnational history of the 19th and 20th centuries and provides an overview of pertinent approaches historians have taken to study them. It covers international and transnational history in all its facets discussing political, cultural, economic and social aspects. This encompasses topics such as globalization, imperialism and decolonization, the Cold War, international trade and entrepreneurship, migration as well as cultural transfers of various kinds. The course is taught as a cooperative undertaking involving the whole range of expertise in international and transnational history assembled at the Department of Archaeology, Conservation and History at the University of Oslo. It thus offers students a first opportunity to meet the teaching staff and potential future supervisors for the master’s theses.
Learning outcome
After you have taken this course you are expected to
- have a broad knowledge about the main trajectories of 19th and 20th century international and transnational history
- be aware of central scholarly debates and controversies connected to the main trajectories of modern international and transnational history
- be able to critically discuss scholarly perspectives on key issues in modern international and transnational history
Admission to the course

The course is available to all students accepted to Modern International and Transnational History (master). Exchange students and students enrolled in other master's degree programmes may be admitted to the course upon application, provided this is approved by their own study program. Modern International and Transnational History (master) students will be prioritized.
Recommended previous knowledge
A good ability to read and understand English is required for this course.
Teaching
The teaching will take place in the form of lectures and seminars taught by various teachers, accompanied by one introductory session held by the course coordinator.
Compulsory assignment:
Students are expected to actively participate in teaching, and prepare for each meeting.
Students are required to submit reflection papers as a portfolio to qualify for the exam. The assignment is specified each semester. Resources and further information on this course will be given in Canvas.
The compulsory assignment must be approved in the same semester as you sit the exam.
Examination
The exam consists of a term paper. The exam task is specified on the Canvas page for the course. The compulsory assignment must be passed in order to sit for the exam.
The examination of this course is integrated in the teaching of the course. It is therefore not possible to sit for the examination other than by being admitted to the course.
Language of examination
The examination text is given in English, and you submit your response in English.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
