Course content
Writing the master’s thesis is the core of the master’s programme. The master’s thesis is an individual scientific research paper of approximately 31000-45000 words within the field of Gender Studies. See the guidelines
The students will, in cooperation with their supervisor, decide the theme of the thesis, select methods and theoretical perspective, as described in their project description (KFL4000). At the end of the fourth semester of the master’s programme the students should have completed their master’s thesis.
All students must have a main academic supervisor authorised by the Centre.
In addition to supervisory meetings, the thesis work will be supported and developed through bi-weekly workshops. In these workshops,?students will meet?to share text and discuss the writing process together with an STK staff member.?
Learning outcome
Having completed the master’s thesis, you can:
- carry out empirical research
- identify and handle the relationship between research question, theoretical perspective, research design and choice of method
- analyse a specific topic in an original and meaningful fashion
- demonstrate a mastery of relevant theory and/or literature
- write a scholarly treatise that encapsulates the approach and the results
- address questions related to gender according to scientific and academic standards
- carry out independent research on a gender related topic
Admission to the course

Teaching
Teaching consists of individual academic supervision given over two semesters. Supervision is mandatory and you will meet regularly with your academic supervisor. Only students admitted to the course may receive supervision and sit for the examination.
2-hour workshops every second week during the?writing semesters will provide a space for discussing drafts of the thesis, the writing process, and obstacles encountered along the way. We will make a plan so that?everyone has?a chance to present their work at least once per semester. The work will be submitted beforehand so that everyone has time to read, and we will practice giving?good feedback. The workshop space will aim to be both helpful and supportive in the writing process.
Access to teaching
A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and has had these approved, is not entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework. A student who has been admitted to a course, but who has not completed compulsory instruction and coursework or had these approved, is entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework, contingent on available capacity.

Examination
The thesis is to be completed and submitted by 15th of May or 15th of November.
The Master’s thesis?should contain between 31000 and 45000 words.?

After the thesis has been submitted, a Commission will be appointed to examine the thesis.
The Commission will give a provisional grade of the thesis. The student?can choose whether they would like to?be informed about the provisional grade ahead of the oral exam?or if they want to wait for the final grade, which will be decided after the oral exam.?
The oral exam will take place at the Centre. The Commission will consist of two examiners of whom at least one is an external examiner. The student should be prepared to answer questions about the thesis content and preparation. The exam will usually take 45-60 minutes. After the exam is completed, the Commission will determine a grade for the thesis, which will be given to the student at the end of the session.

Language of examination
You may submit your response in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
Resit an examination
A master’s thesis that is not passed may be resubmitted only once, and then within the agreed time and in revised form. A master’s thesis that is passed may not be resubmitted in revised form.
If you?withdraw from the exam?after the deadline, this will be counted as an examination attempt.
