Background
The Nordic Sound and Music Computing University Hub (NordicSMC) brings together a group of internationally leading sound and music computing researchers from all five Nordic countries, from Aalborg University (AAU), Aalto University (AALTO), KTH Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), University of Iceland (UoI), andUniversity of Oslo (UiO) with the aim of consolidating and strengthening theinternational research profile of the partners in the field of sound and music research. This entails research and infrastructure collaboration with the different institutions within the Nordic partners. The constellation is unique in that the network covers the field of sound and music from the soft to the hard, including the arts and humanities, the social and natural sciences as well as engineering, and with a high level of technological competency.
Objectives of Short-Term Scientific Missions
Short-Term Scientific Missions (STSMs) are aimed at strengthening the existing networks within the NordicSMC HUB partner institutions by allowing scientists to go to another institution to foster research collaboration, to learn a new technique or totake measurements using instruments and/or methods not available in their owninstitution/laboratory. They are particularly (yet not exclusively) intended for PhDstudents within the network.
Topics
Emphasis is on activities that will contribute to the research on one of the topics of promoted by the five NodicSMC partner institutions.The applicants should, at the moment of the submission, specify to which of the NordicMSC partner institutions their proposed mission belongs to. They should furthermore show clearly in their applications how the planned activities and the selection of Hosting Institution will contribute to this aim.
Aalborg University
AAU promotes STSMs focusing on basic and applied research in sonic interactiondesign, with particular focus on sonic interactions in virtual and augmentedenvironments. Topics include but are not limited to the development of new theories,guidelines, models, and tools for testing in virtual and augmented environments;design of virtual instruments; entrainment in rhythmic interaction; analysis ofmovement quality and expression; and more.
Aalto University
AALTO has two research teams involved in the NordicSMC network, both part of the Aalto Acoustics Lab: the Audio Signal Processing team (Prof. Vesa V?lim?ki) and the Communication Acoustics team (Prof. Ville Pulkki). Suitable topics for an STSM may be related to virtual analog modeling, artificial reverberation, psychoacoustics, sound synthesis, or spatial audio reproduction, coding, and synthesis, for example.
KTH Royal Institute of Technology
KTH promotes STSMs focusing both on basic research questions addressed in perceptual, cognitive, and emotional studies of sonic interactions, and on applied research focusing on the design and use of sonifications in interaction. Topics include but are not limited to the development of new theories, guidelines, models,and tools for the sonic representation of body motion qualities in interactive applications, such as robust non-verbal expression in virtual agents and humanoidrobots, or in folk music dance and music.
University of Iceland
UoI promotes STSMs focusing on research in tactile and auditory displays as well as binaural sound technology.
University of Oslo
At UiO the visiting researchers will be connected to ?RITMO? Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies in Rhythm, Time and Motion. This centre houses around 50 researchers from musicology, psychology and informatics. Visiting researchers will have access to the ?RITMO? facilities, including the ?fourMs lab?. Topics could include rhythm analysis, motion capture analysis, music information retrieval, and interactive music systems.
The Applicant
The selection of the applicant is the responsibility of the Management Committee(MC) of the Action. Priority is given to applicants who are engaged in a programme of research as a postgraduate student or postdoctoral fellow or are employed in aninstitution of a NordicSMC Hub member. The Host must be an institution partnermember of NordicSMC Hub.
Duration
Short-Term Scientific Missions, minimum one week (5 working days), maximum 1month, shall be made within the time frame of the operation identified in the proposal and within the period of the NordicSMC Hub.
Finance
The financial support is a contribution to the costs of a STSM and may not necessarily cover all the costs in each case. The grant should normally cover only travel and subsistence. The financial contribution for a STSM will be a fixed grant based on the Applicant’s budget request and the evaluation of the application by the STSM assessment committee. An amount of 60 to 90 eur for the daily allowance in particular for longer stays and 200 to 300 eur for the travel is recommended. The total of a STSM shall not exceed 3000 eur. Any exception needs special justification.If approved, the grant will be paid to the home institution after completion of the STSM.
