Individual adaptation in everyday study
If you have a disability, illness or special needs, you may apply for individual adaptation.
Who can apply?
Students with disabilities and students with special needs can apply for individual adaptation. The right applies to the organization of the institution, teaching, teaching materials and exams.
Pregnant students and students caring for children may also apply for individual adaptation.
Disabilities can be impairments, such as loss or damage to a body part or one of the body's functions.
Special needs involve physical, psychosocial and / or learning challenges. The special need may be temporary or permanent, but must be of a significant nature.
Deadline
If the deadline expires on a Saturday, Sunday or public holiday, it will be extended to the next working day.
If your application is justified by a disability, illness or injury that occurred after the application deadline, or if other special reasons indicates so, you can submit an application after the deadline.
Individual adaptation in everyday studies:
- September 1 for the autumn semester
- February 1 for the spring semester
- July 14 for The International Summer School
Individual adaptation for practical training and group teaching:
- May 1 for practical training in the fall semester
- November 1 for practical training in the spring semester
The deadline for group teaching only applies to medical studies.
Examples of individual adaptations
- Reservation of study space in a reading room/hall.
- Access to quiet rooms.
- Providing information to lecturers and supervisors about your special needs.
- Guidance on how to apply for a mentor, if you receive education as a measure through NAV.
- You can apply for reduced progression of studies if you need more time on your study programme
- If you are prevented from completing your studies, you can apply for Leave of Absence from Study Programme
Contact your faculty and ask for guidance if you are unsure on which adaptation is possible.
Documentation
When applying, you must attach documentation from a doctor/expert on your disability, illness or special needs. You are responsible for informing your case as best as possible so that UiO can assess it.
The documentation must:
- contain information about how your difficulties affect your everyday studies.
- be applicable for the period for which you are applying for adaptation.
- be in English or a Scandinavian language.
If you do not have the documentation available now, you can send it within 3 weeks after the application deadline.
The application form must be used for both forwarding and submission of documentation.

Documentation of your disability, illness or special need can be documented via a doctor's certificate or equivalent.
Reading and writing difficulties
In the case of reading and writing difficulties, a statement or assessment report from PPT/speech therapist/specialist must be attached. Examples of reading and writing difficulties can be dyslexia, dyscalculia and dysgraphia.
Birth and care of children
Documentation of birth or confirmation of parental responsibility can be a birth certificate, or confirmation from the Norwegian Tax Agency of parental responsibility.
Application form
If you are enrolled in courses at more than one faculty, you must send an application and documentation to each faculty.
If you are unsure of which faculty or department your course belongs to, look up the course on the course page and check the bottom of the page under "Contact". You can also ask the information centre at your faculty.

Note that individual adaptation for exams have a separate application form and deadline.
How is my application processed?
Applications for accommodation are assessed individually, based on the documentation, your wishes and needs, as well as academic requirements in the course. The purpose of adaptation is to give students equal education opportunities and remove barriers. Granted adaptation will not always be in line with your own or the doctor's assessment.
Individual adaptation can not lead to a disproportionate burden for UiO, reduce the academic requirements or give the student an advantage compared to fellow students. It will therefore vary between different study programs and subjects which adaptation that can be granted.
You will receive a response to the application in writing, either in a digital mailbox or by regular post. You usually receive an answer from the faculty within one month. If it takes longer to process the application, you will receive a preliminary answer as to why it takes longer.

Tibi - Library for Adapted Literature
Tibi (earlier NLB) offers free lending of audio books, e-books and braille books. Anyone who has difficulty reading printed text and ordinary books due to a disability or illness has the right to borrow from Tibi. You have to contact Tibi directly if you wish to use this offer.
L?nekassen
L?nekassen in the Norwegian State Educational Loan Fund. If you have a disability that prevents you from working alongside your studies, or has caused a delay in your studies, you may be entitled to extra loans and grants via L?nekassen.
Exchange through Erasmus+
UiO students traveling on exchange through Erasmus+ can receive an Erasmus grant to study one or two semesters at one of UiO's many partner universities. Students who need adaptation can receive an additional grant for the exchange stay.
