Who can apply?
If you have been offered and accepted a place at a study programme at UiO, you can apply for a postponed start of studies for up to four semesters (two years).
You can apply for a postponed start of studies on the basis of:
- Parental leave
- Conscription
- Long-term illness (yourself or someone in your care)
- Other weighty reasons beyond your control
In some cases, the structure of the study programme means that you cannot postpone the start of studies for one or three semesters. In these cases, you must apply for a postponed start of studies for two or four semesters.
You must be aware that during the absence there may be changes in the study programme that have an impact on your further course of study.
Application deadline
- 1 September for study programmes starting in the autumn semester.
- 1 February for study programmes starting in the spring semester.
The study programmes in Clinical Nutrition, Medicine, Dentistry and Dental Care have earlier application deadlines. You should apply for a postponed start of studies before the deadline for responding to an offer of a study place.
If the deadline expires on a Saturday, Sunday or public holiday, it will be extended to the next working day.

The documentation must confirm the need for a postponed start of studies and may, for example, be a confirmation of expected date of delivery / birth certificate, medical certificate, conscription card or other equivalent documentation.

Please note that the online form is not encrypted. Documentation containing sensitive information should therefore be delivered or sent by regular mail. Please make sure to highlight that the documents concerns an application for postponed start of studies.
The application is not processed until the required documents are received. Insufficient documentation will delay the processing of your application.
If you do not meet the requirements to be granted postponed start of studies, you may apply for general leave of absence without documentation. Please find more information on the following webpage.
The Faculty of Law
You apply through an online form:
This form only applies to first-year students admitted to a study programme at the Faculty of Law.
If your application for a postponed start of studies is granted, you can start the study programme at the ordinary start of studies in the semester to which you have been granted a postponement. Applications are normally granted for one year at a time.
For the Master of Laws, you can only defer the start of your studies from autumn to autumn and from spring to spring.
The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences

If you do not meet the requirements to be granted postponed start of studies, you may apply for general leave of absence without documentation.
The Faculty of Medicine

How do you begin your studies after a postponed start?
When you have been granted a postponed start of studies, you can start the study programme at the ordinary start of studies in the semester to which you have been granted a postponement.
For you who have been admitted through the Norwegian Universities and Colleges Admission Service
1. Postponed start of studies for one semester from autumn till spring
You should not register as a student in Studentweb or pay semester and Kopinor fees for this semester.
You start your studies in the usual way the following semester. You are responsible for keeping up to date on deadlines for registration and payment of semester and Kopinor fees.
We advise you to contact the student information center at the faculty well in advance of starting your studies to get the information you need.
2. Postponed start of studies for one semester from spring till autumn or for two, three or four semesters
You should not register as a student in Studentweb or pay semester and Kopinor fees for these semesters.
You should apply for new admission in the usual way via the Norwegian Universities and Colleges Admission Service before the application deadline 15 April (1 March for some applicant groups) in the year for which your study place has been reserved. You will see the time for a new application in the answer you receive from your faculty about postponed start of studies.
You are guaranteed a study place as long as you apply for the correct study program at the time you have received information about, and follow ordinary procedures in the admission process.
For you who have been admitted to a 1,5 or?2 year master's programme
If you are granted a postponed start of studies for one or more semesters, you should not register as a student in Studentweb or pay semester and Kopinor fees for these semesters.
If you are granted a postponed start of studies, you should not apply for admission to the master's programme again the following spring, but you should contact your department or centre?before 1 June (start of studies in August) or 1 December (start of studies in January) to be guaranteed a place on the study programme.
You are responsible for keeping up to date on deadlines for registration and payment of semester and Kopinor fees.
