Grants and Scholarships - Funding Opportunities for Fieldwork

This page contains information about potential funding opportunities for master¡¯s students of Social Anthropology that could cover (partial) expenses related to fieldwork. This page will not be updated regularly, current availabilities and deadlines are therefore to be found on the respective websites of the grants.

Grants and funding at UiO

• SAI Financial support for fieldwork
  The Master's Programme in Social Anthropology offers financial support for fieldwork expenses to promote and facilitate students' fieldwork. Social Anthropology master's students can be reimbursed for certain expenses up to maximum fixed rates of NOK 2.000, 5.000 and 10.000.

• Other grants at the Faculty of Social Sciences: In English and in Norwegian.

• Erasmus+ Traineeship

  For this grant you will need an internship agreement with a hosting institution in the country of your fieldwork.
  Step by step guide
• Department of Sociology and Human Geography: Osloforskning
  The grant is up to NOK 30.000 for work on master's theses having topics related to Oslo.
• Centre for Development and the Environment (SUM):
  • Arne N?ss Stipend
    For master's student interested in the philosophical, ethical and legal dimensions of environmental challenges of our time.
    3 stipends per call. NOK 3.000 per month (2022)
  • Erik Blytt Stipend 
    NOK 6.000 per month (2022). Must be fluent in Norwegian.
    Relevant topics
• ARENA Centre for European Studies
  The grant amounts to NOK 20.000 (10.000 is transferred at the beginning of the period, the final 10.000 is paid upon the MA thesis¡¯ completion).
• Science Shop at UiO 
• UiO:Energy and Environment: Grants for International mobility and collaboration and Summer research projects for students within the field of sustainable energy, climate and environment. Students are under supervision of research groups working within the topic at the University of Oslo. Scholarship of NOK 50 000.

• Grants at centres and associations

• NAF's fieldwork grant 
  This scholarship continues the main intention from Signe Howell's fieldwork grant, with some adjustments.Financial contribution to the fieldwork expenses of a suitable Master student in social anthropology at a Norwegian university to encourage field studies outside the "Western world¡±. Funds up to NOK 30.000.
• The University of Oslo Sasakawa Young Leaders Scholarship Fund 
  Funds of up to NOK 50.000 per applicant may be applied for to contribute to covering costs related to a research stay abroad for selected UiO post-graduate students, primarily candidates at the PhD level within the areas of Humanities,Social Sciences, Law, Education and Theology. Excellent Masters'-level applicants may also be considered. Apply here
• PRIO Peace Research Institute Oslo 
  Unpaid but opportunity to take on paid part-time work at PRIO (up to one day a week). To be considered for this programme, your thesis topic must be thematically related to one of their ongoing research projects or relevant to the strategic interests of their individual researchers or groups.
• Institute for Defence Studies - IFS
  At present, the award amounts to NOK 6,000 per month and is tax free.

• UNIFOR

  UNIFOR is a platform with a collection of current calls for grants.
  Applicants need to have a Norwegian identity or D-number to sign into the application portal (even if the grant itself doesn¡¯t require it). If you do not (yet) have one, your supervisor can submit the application on your behalf.
