Programme structure

The master's programme Informatics: Design, Use, Interaction is a full-time, two-year programme worth 120 ECTS credits. You choose one of the following study tracks:

  • A long master's thesis worth 60 ECTS credits. You also take 60 ECTS credits of coursework.
  • A short master's thesis worth 30 ECTS credits. You also take 90 ECTS credits of coursework.

How many courses you need to take depends on the size of the master's thesis. Half of the courses you take must be core courses, regardless of wether you choose a long or a short master's thesis. Core courses are the most central courses within the master's programme.

Master's thesis and courses

You choose your courses and topic for your master's thesis in collaboration with your supervisor during the first semester.

Mandatory course: IN5000 – Qualitative Research Methods (core course)

The courses in the Design programme are offered by the four research groups that teach within the programme. Students admitted to the programme can choose courses from all the research groups listed below. Unless otherwise specified, the courses in the lists are core courses.

When you write your master's thesis within a research group, you must take one or more courses taught by that group.

Progression requirements

The standard study time for the master's programme is two years, or four years if you apply for part-time studies. If you spend more time than two years, it's important that you familiarize yourself with the policies for admission and your right to study. Your right to study may be cancelled if you do not register for the first semester of the study programme and you have absence without valid reason for more than one semester.

Recognition of master's courses from former education

If you are admitted to the Masters' programme and you have completed Master courses outside the University of Oslo, you may apply to have these courses recognised as part of your degree. Please contact the Department of Informatics for more information.
