Why is it not working?

Here you can get answers to common questions.

I can't log in

Log in to Canvas from canvas.uio.no with your UiO username and password. Two-factor authentication is required.

Canvas does not work, its functions have disappeared or something in Canvas looks strange

This is either because of the web browser you are using or your cookies/privacy settings in your web browser.

Web browsers:

Use Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox. Canvas supports the two latest versions of Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Safari. Internet Explorer is not supported.

Information capsules (cookies):

The problem can also be caused by your web browser's settings. Open your privacy settings in your web browser and check that information capsules (cookies) for Canvas are allowed. You can also try enabling cross-site tracking for Canvas. If this does not solve your problem then try a different web browser. Chrome and Firefox work best for Canvas.

  • Use the website What Is My Browser to check if your web browser allows information capsules (cookies)
  • Use the website What Is My Browser to check if your web browser allows cross-site tracking"

Where are my courses?

It can take up to 24 hours from when you have registered for a course in Studentweb to when you get access to the course in Canvas. If you are only registered for the examination(s) in a course you will get access to the course in Canvas within five days after the deadline for exam registrations.

You can see which courses you have access to in your Canvas dashboard (canvaslms.com).

Note: The first time you log in and use the Canvas mobile app you will be asked to choose your favorite courses. This may remove the favorite courses that you previously chose for your dashboard in the browser version of Canvas (canvas.uio.no). This will only happen the first time you log in via the mobile app. All of your courses are still accessible in Canvas, and can be marked as favorites again by choosing "Courses" and then "All courses" from the global navigation menu. All of the courses you mark as favorites with then be consistent from there onwards.

If you log in and your courses do not appear in your dashboard or you cannot access course materials/content in that course, then it may be that your teacher has not yet published the course or the materials/content in Canvas.

  • Do you need help with this? Contact the study coordinator or teacher in your course.

I have changed groups in Studentweb, but the change has not yet been made in Canvas

If you switch groups in Studentweb (for example from one seminar group to another), it may take some time before this is updated in Canvas. If you changed groups more than 24 hours ago in Studentweb and it is still not updated in Canvas, you should contact the study coordinator for your course.

I cannot open Zoom in the course navigation menu

Some courses use Zoom which can be opened from the course's navigation menu in Canvas. If you cannot open Zoom from the course navigation menu this often is an issue with your web browser's settings.

Possible causes:

  • If you see the error message "Sorry, your session was expired. Please refresh the page or login again" when you try to open Zoom in the course navigation menu, check your browser's settings and then refresh the webpage.

If it still does not work, contact the study coordinator for your course.

I cannot read or access course materials from the Pensum link in the course navigation menu

Most courses at UiO use the course materials system Leganto, which makes the course reading list automaticaly available in the Canvas room via "Pensum" in the course navigation menu. If there are reading list materials that can be read online you can open them here.

Possible issues:

  • If you see a message that you do not have access when you try to open the Pensum link in the course navigation menu, check your browser's settings and then refresh the webpage.
  • If you log in to Canvas with FEIDE instead of Weblogin, you may receive a message that you do not have access because you are logged in with not translated (%BACKEND%) when you try to open the Pensum link in the course navigation menu. You can solve this problem by either:
    • Logging out of Canvas, and then logging in again with Weblogin (this is the standard login method at UiO), or
    • Log in to uio.no with Weblogin before you open Canvas

If it still does not work, contact the study coordinator for your course.

Do you still need help?
