Using bookmarks in other browsers

The instructions below are general and will be similar in most modern browsers.

How to create a bookmark

Method 1: Use the star icon in the address bar

  1. Go to the website you want to create a bookmark for.
  2. Look at the top of the browser, in the address bar where the URL is displayed.
  3. Click on the star (?) or the icon for Add bookmark / Add to favorites.

    2. where it should be saved (for example, "Bookmarks bar" or a specific folder)
    3. Confirm by pressing Save/Done.

Method 2: Keyboard shortcut

Most browsers have a shortcut to create a bookmark:

Windows: press Ctrl + D

Mac: press Cmd + D

Then select the name and location and save.

Where to find your bookmarks?

Bookmarks can be displayed in two main places:

Bookmarks bar (at the top of the browser)

This is a line just below the address bar, with icons and text for your most important bookmarks.

  • Advantage: Very quick access – one click.
  • Disadvantage: Limited space.

You can turn the bookmarks bar on and off in the menu (often under "View" → "Bookmarks bar"). Many browsers also have a shortcut, such as

Ctrl + Shift + B (Windows) or

Cmd + Shift + B (Mac).

Bookmarks menu / Bookmarks page

All bookmarks (including folders) can be found in a separate menu or page, often accessible via a menu icon (three dots or three lines) → "Bookmarks" / "Favorites" or a dedicated button for bookmarks.

Here you will get a complete overview and can create, move, and delete bookmarks.

How to organize your bookmarks

When you have many bookmarks, it quickly becomes unwieldy. Therefore, it's a good idea to use clear names, group bookmarks into folders, and tidy up occasionally.

Give bookmarks good names

When saving a bookmark, you can change the name. Choose names that are short but explanatory, so you remember what the bookmark is for.

You can also right-click on an existing bookmark and select "Edit" / "Rename" to change the name later.

Create folders for different themes

To keep organized, it's helpful to create folders based on, for example, what you use the bookmarks for.

How to create a bookmarks folder

  1. Go to the bookmarks menu.
  2. Select "New folder".
  3. Give the folder a clear name.
  4. Save.

Then you can drag and drop bookmarks into the folder, or select the folder directly when creating a new bookmark.

Move bookmarks

You can normally drag a bookmark with the mouse to another place or folder or right-click on the bookmark → "Move to …"

This is useful if you want to:

  • Move frequently used bookmarks to the bookmarks bar
  • Group related bookmarks in the same folder
  • Clean up old structures

Tidying up and maintaining bookmarks

Over time, many accumulate bookmarks that are never used. Some simple tidying makes it much easier to find things later on.

Delete bookmarks you no longer need

  1. Right-click on a bookmark you no longer need.
  2. Select "Delete".

You can also delete entire folders, but be aware that all bookmarks inside will also disappear.

Check that important links still work

Some websites change addresses. When a bookmark no longer works, look up the website's new address and create a bookmark there. Delete the old bookmark that no longer works.

Update names and structure as needed

When tasks or routines change, bookmarks can also be adjusted:

  • Give new, more appropriate names
  • Move bookmarks to other folders
  • Create new folders for new projects or responsibilities

Synchronization between devices (optional)

Many browsers can synchronize bookmarks between PC, mobile, and tablet if you log in with an account. This way, you have the same bookmarks no matter where you are. Check settings for "Synchronization" in menus or search online to find out how to do this for your browser.
